Test Information for College & the Armed Services

& the Armed Services

 ACT

The ACT is an achievement test which is used for college admission purposes.  The ACT is administered nationwide six times per year. East Stroudsburg HS North offers the ACT each school year during the months of October and April.  For exact test dates and registration information, please go to  http://www.actstudent.org/.

The ACT, which is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes long, consists of subject area tests in English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science.  Students can also take a Writing subject test by registering for the ACT Plus Writing.  In trying to determine whether they may perform (i.e. score) better on the ACT or SAT, students should familiarize themselves with the ACT by visiting www.actstudent.org and looking up sample questions.  We encourage students to meet with their guidance counselor if they need more information.

SAT

The SAT is widely utilized by colleges and universities to assist in determining a student’s academic readiness for post-secondary education.  Along with a student’s high school GPA, class rank and strength of curriculum, many four-year colleges and universities use SAT scores as a major factor in their admission decisions.

If you are looking for opportunities to prepare for the SAT for free, please review the guides below.

Our guidance office recommends that students who want to enter a four-year college or university directly upon graduation take the SAT once before the end of their junior year.  Students who need to retake the SAT to improve their score for college admission can also re-register to take the test in the fall of their senior year.  Not all post-secondary institutions require SAT scores.  For instance, most community colleges, art institutes and trade/technical schools do not require a student to take the SAT for admission purposes. During their college research, all students should refer to each school’s individual admission requirements regarding whether or not they must take the SAT.  Confused about whether or not to take the SAT?  The guidance office welcomes juniors and seniors to make an appointment with their counselor to discuss if the SAT is right for them.

For the convenience of our students, each school year, in October, November, December, March and May, East Stroudsburg HS South hosts the SAT exam.  Please refer to the guidance calendar for specific dates, or click here for test dates at HS South and other surrounding schools. The SAT can also be taken during the months of August, September, and June at other regional high schools.

To register for the SAT, students should also visit http://collegeboard.org.  In order to register on-line, students must first create a My Organizer account.  By using this account, students can also research colleges, send SAT scores to college admission offices, and search for scholarships.

SAT vs. ACT

If you want to look at a quick comparison of the SAT and the ACT please refer to the two documents below.  One document covers the differences in the subject matter and the other one compares the overall scores on each test.  These are just a quick reference and I encourage you to visit each of their websites for more detailed information and practice questions.

Due to recent changes in the SAT format, new comparison information is not readily available.

PSAT

The PSAT is a great way for students to prepare for the SAT and get accustomed to the test format and experience. The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) measures the educational skills students have developed. These include: Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing Skills.  We now offer two separate tests for Sophomores and Juniors at different times of the year.

The PSAT/NMSQT is offered to Juniors every October during the regular school day. Please refer to the guidance calendar and the PSAT flyers listed below for this year's date and registration information. The PSAT is free for Juniors.

The PSAT 10 is now offered to tenth grade students only every April at high school South.  Sophomores do have to pay for the exam and the cost is usually between $15 - $20.  This is a great opportunity to get an early look at the SAT and see what you need to work on for future college board exams.

For more information on the PSAT and other benefits of this test, such as the National Merit Scholarship Program and the My College QuickStart Program, please visit http://www.collegeboard.org/student/testing/psat/about.html

ASVAB

This year the ASVAB Test will be held at our high school in November and in March each school year.  Interested juniors & seniors can register to take the ASVAB by signing-up in the Guidance Office.  There is no fee for the ASVAB. Students can also contact a local recruiter to request to take the ASVAB.

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is one of the most widely used, multiple-aptitude tests in the world, developed and maintained by the Department of Defense. The military uses the ASVAB to determine if a student is eligible to enlist in a branch of the service and to identify the occupations that best suit the student's abilities. Junior, senior and postsecondary school students can use their ASVAB scores for enlistment for up to two years after taking the test. However, no one is under any obligation to the military as a result of taking the ASVAB.

The ASVAB consists of the following eight individual tests: General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information, Auto and Shop Information, Mechanical Comprehension.  Students are provided with scores on each of these individual tests and three Career Exploration Score composites: Verbal Skills, Math Skills and Science and Technical Skills. The battery takes approximately three hours to complete. Parents wanting additional information about the ASVAB can use the following link:
